City of Zadar has always been important trading hub and place of strategic importance for all its governors. Romans started to fortify the city in order to defend themselves from the enemies. The Venetians continued that tradition and had built a completely new fortification system of Zadar during Middle Ages. In 19th century Austrians decided to start with demilitarization of the city so in order to do so, they begun transforming the fortresses into public parks.

Forte Fortress – in 16th century Venetian general Sforza Pallavicino demolished the suburbs of Varoš and ordered building of big fortress that was a part of defensive fortification system of the city until the 19th century. During the time of fist Austrian government, area was afforested and turned into a park but wasn`t completely demilitarized. Nowadays park carries the name of Croatian writer Vladimir Nazor.
Landward Gate – designed by Veronese architect Michele Sanmicheli in 16th century present the most beautiful Renaissance monument of Zadar. Above the central ingress stands winged lion of st. Mark, symbol of Venetian Republic to which Zadar belonged at the time.
Five Wells Square – one of the most beautiful sqaures in the city that became one of the symbols of Zadar.
Queen Jelena Madijevka Park – the first publc park in Croatia. From the small hill within the park spreads wonderful view on st. Simons church, Square of Petar Zoranić and Kalelarga street.
Seafront Promenade – definitely one of the most magical areas in Zadar. In the past entire Old Town was fortified and surrounded by city walls. When the city has begun to spread, people started to demolish the walls. After WWII the entire area was afforested and turned into one of the most beautiful parts of Zadar.
